The Birdhouse

Venue

Vancouver, British Columbia

The Birdhouse is a queer and trans operated community events space, catered to the queer community. We make a special effort to centre, support, employ, and make welcome members of our community who are further marginalized. We strive to make a safer queer community gathering space, and are always open to feedback/working with those who attend events. The Birdhouse is located at 44 W 4th Ave (W 4th Ave and Manitoba St). The Google Maps pin for The Birdhouse takes you to the back alley. The entrance is actually on 4th Ave at this location: Michael St. Clair Cleaners. Wheelchair Access The Birdhouse is at ground level, with a wheelchair-accessible entrance/exit (double doors 70 in. wide, single door is 35). There are no stairs or steps to navigate the venue. The only area that is inaccessible is a raised area left of the stage. The door to the outdoor patio is 35 inches wide. There is a cord that is ½ in. off the ground running parallel before the door to the outdoor patio. About 5ft from the patio door the ground slopes approx. 20 degrees. Washrooms There is one wheelchair-accessible washroom and several single-stall washrooms ranging from 32-27 inches in width inside the venue. All washrooms are all genders. Seating For shows, there is reserved seating space for disabled folks at the front of the stage. Please make use of it as you need. We know not all disabilities are visible, this space is for you if you need it. Sensory Information Most events held at The Birdhouse are shows and parties with bright, flashing lights and loud music unless otherwise specified. We have earplugs available at the door as well as with the buddies. We have an indoor lower stimulation area/lounge inside the venue with couches, bar tables and coffee tables. It is slightly lower volume and has no moving lights inside. Please note the lounge is directly connected to the nightclub, so both light and noise stream in.

VIRL Harbourfront Library

Arts & Culture

Nanaimo, British Columbia

As a regional system, Vancouver Island Regional Library (VIRL) covers a vast geographic area, from Sooke and Sidney in the south to Port Hardy, Haida Gwaii and the Central Coast. Our system, the fifth largest in British Columbia, totals more than 42,000 square kilometres and includes a mix of urban, rural, and remote communities that work together to ensure exemplary library services for all our members. Each of our member jurisdictions contributes to a pooled budgeting system, as mandated by the Library Act. With this model, VIRL is able to leverage economies of scale, discounted prices on library materials, and a robust eLibrary with the very latest in ebooks, audiobooks, streaming and downloadable music, movies and TV, and online learning opportunities. VIRL uses a floating collection, which means that no matter where someone lives, they can request any title in our collection and have it delivered to their branch. This model ensures equity of access for all VIRL cardholders and means they can take advantage of the entirety of our collection. We focus on providing the highest quality titles, both in print and digital formats, for all of our cardholders. Our branches reflect how people are changing the way they interact with their libraries. 21st Century libraries must balance the traditional services we have always provided with the flexible spaces, new technologies, digital resources, and exciting programming that people expect today.
